The city has been for 1100 years the capital of the Serenissima Republic of Venice and is known in this respect as the Serenissima, the Dominante and the Queen of the Adriatic: for its urban peculiarities and for its artistic heritage, it is universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, declared, together with its lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has contributed to make it the second Italian city after Rome with the highest flow of tourists.
